I regularly rent luxury cars on Turo and am tired of paying for their expensive insurance product. It easily doubles the cost of the rental and there has got to be another option.
I am a safe and defensive driver with no claim history and excellent credit. I have literally been pulled over once in forty years of driving and it was for driving a 40-foot motorhome too slowly uphill in a downpour. (I did not receive a ticket.)
The thing is, currently my only vehicle is that motorhome. Which means that I don't have car insurance that extends to a non-owned auto.
What are my options here?
- Would umbrella insurance work for this?
- Is it even possible to get individual non-owned auto insurance that covers the auto itself and not just liability?
- Would it be idiotic (or legal) to purchase and insure a car for the purpose of using that policy as my coverage for Turo rentals?
*Because it might make a difference, the actual value of the cars I am renting on Turo is between $80k and $350k+. On average I probably rent one for five or six days a month, though I can see that increasing if I wasn't paying an additional $100 – $300+ daily for peace of mind.
