Drew Yagodnik: We get a lot of questions about how many miles a year can I drive the car? Now with our main carrier, American Modern, we have different rate tiers as far as mileage is concerned. We have 1,000 miles per year, a 3,000-mile plan and a 6,000-mile plan. That really gives you the ability to tailor the policy to your driving habits. If you have more of the garage queen or you’re just, life is busy, you don’t have as much time to enjoy that car, the 1,000-mile plan is perfect. But I would say more times than not, most clients want to go on the 3,000-mile plan. It gives them a lot of flexibility to do a lot of shows or local cruise-ins or things along those line. The 6,000-mile plan – typically we see people who are more in those warmer climate states that get more than three to four good months of driving. West coast, Southern states, maybe Florida, Texas, those clients might take a higher mileage plan. But don’t be surprised, too. We have a lot of clients in those states that go on the 1,000 mile plan. They may have five collector cars and it makes sense to put all the cars on a 1,000 miles because you can only drive the car so much.

Indy WOW 2019 – Classic Auto’s Drew Yagodnik gets the phenomenal backstory from Steve Moore of The Car Vault on a masterful restoration of a 1976 BMW 2002. The car’s unusual green paint job gets a ton of attention at car shows, although it’s the custom touch that really wows enthusiasts. An amalgam of all three generations of the BMW 2002, it has an original BMW 1600 engine under the hood and is set to have ultra-modern options like a keyless ignition system and a touchpad, push-button screen in the dash.

Video Transcript – Drew Yagodnik: Here are some things to think about when you’re applying for collector car insurance and what you’re going to need. Our process, we’ve got an application, we’re going to need that signed by you. The typical stuff: VIN number, your driver’s license number, maybe the current odometer reading from the car or cars, photos of the vehicle. And very simple, just one good color photo typically is enough for us. In some cases, if you have a restomod or a street rod, we might ask for some photos; maybe if you have a custom interior or motor that we’d like to see. From there we’ll verify your primary auto insurance. So just a copy of your insurance policy for your primary drivers. Typically we can turn these policies around in as little as a business day. Some things might take a little bit longer if we need to get more information from you.

Video Transcript – Drew Yagodnik: A lot of agents like using Classic Auto Insurance because we’ve got really a tremendously knowledgeable staff. They’ve been with us a long time, they’re passionate about collector cars, so we try to pass that service on to you and your client. Also, another big thing is part of this policy is shop at your choice for repairs. So, your client can pick the shop that they wanna use to fix that car. We also give your client the option to buy the vehicle back on salvage, should the vehicle be totaled. But at the end of the day, we’re trying to give you that whole package. Great customer service, knowledgeable staff, people that understand collector cars and a great claims process.

Video Transcript – Drew Yagodnik: So, we do a lot of business with agents all around the country. And the primary reason they come to us is they may not have access to a collector car market for their clients. And as the agent, some of the benefits for your agency or your company would be the fact that you’re going to help that client protect that asset. And maybe you don’t have a lot of experience with collector cars. That’s what we’re here for. We can help you value the car, get the right policy. We can tailor the policy for your client based on what they’re telling you as far as how many miles a year they drive the car. We want to make sure we’re protecting them the same that you are from a liability and uninsured motors perspective from their regular use auto. So, give us a call today and we’d love to try and help your client out.

Drew Yagodnik: So, a question we get a lot is: How old does a collector car have to be to qualify for a collector car insurance policy? And the simple answer in our agency’s case is it doesn’t matter what year the car is. It really matters does that vehicle have collectability today, or is this a car that may have collectability down the road? So, we’re not really focused on the year. Now, obviously, the older the car, typically, it’s a lot easier to make that case, so that’s our true collector car. But we do get a lot of phone calls from people that have an early ’90s Honda Accord. It’s an older car. It’s just not collectable. So, what we’re looking at, again, on the vehicles that are a little bit newer is: Is there a lineage of collectability, or is this a model that may have demand down the road?
